Surrey Estate Planning Lawyers

An estate plan is important not only for those with complex assets and personal care needs but also for those with relatively simple estates. At Brawn Karras & Sanderson, our Surrey estate planning lawyers will work closely with you to develop and implement the right plan for you and your family.

Components of an Estate Plan

As part of our estate planning practice we prepare and advise on a variety of estate planning tools, including:

  • Wills
  • Trusts
  • Health care directives
  • Representation agreements
  • Nominations of committee
  • Insurance trusts
  • Estate "freezes"
  • Family, joint partner and alter ego trusts

A Will is the cornerstone of most estate plans. Having a Will allows you to control how your property will be distributed on death, who will be responsible for administering your affairs, and who will act as guardian of your minor children. It also allows you to create trusts for beneficiaries with disabilities or other unique needs. If you do not have a Will in place, our law determines how your property is distributed on death, and the result may not be what you would expect or choose.

For those with blended families, estate planning is particularly important. Among the issues that can arise are the balancing of competing interests of children from a previous relationship with those of the new spouse, and the preservation of assets from a first marriage for the benefit of the children from that union.

The Surrey estate planning lawyers at our firm will take the time to discuss your options with you and fully explain the legal, financial and tax implications of each one. Our partner Kim Karras has focused on this area over the past 20 of her 25-plus years in practice. Other members of her profession seek her expertise, which she provides to them in the context of Continuing Legal Education courses on estate planning.
